AlexRenew is more than a wastewater utility. As a nationally recognized wastewater treatment leader, AlexRenew safely treats wastewater, protects the Potomac River, advances sustainability, and invests in solutions that benefit our community, its members, and our environment.

The coming years will mark an especially important chapter in AlexRenew's story. As the authority enters the final stages of the transformative RiverRenew program, advances new solutions to address emerging challenges such as PFAS, strengthens customer affordability programs, builds stronger regional partnerships to support water solutions across Northern Virginia, and continues to oversee investments that will shape clean water services for generations.

What is the role of an AlexRenew Board Member?

Board members provide governance and strategic oversight for AlexRenew. They help guide the organization’s long-term direction while ensuring strong financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, and continued public trust. Responsibilities include:

• Helping shape AlexRenew's long-term vision and strategic priorities
• Reviewing and approving annual budgets, rates, and major capital investments
• Supporting responsible reinvestment in critical infrastructure and environmental protection
• Understanding and balancing community needs, affordability, and operational stability
• Serving as ambassadors for AlexRenew's mission and public value
• Participating in Board meetings and in select Board committees, preparing thoughtfully for discussions

• Public policy, governance, or community leadership – experience navigating complex public issues, balancing competing priorities, and building trust among stakeholders
• Infrastructure, environment, sustainability, or utility services – knowledge of water, wastewater, energy, environmental management, public works, engineering, or related fields is valued
• Financial stewardship and affordability – work to balance long-term investment, responsible rate setting, affordability, and fiscal sustainability
• Strategic thinking and constructive problem solving – a willingness to engage thoughtfully with emerging challenges, ask good questions, and contribute to practical, community-focused solutions
