Hooffs Run: One Year Later
One year ago AlexRenew celebrated the completion of the Commonwealth Interceptor, part of RiverRenew. After building the Interceptor to reduce combined sewer overflows in Hooffs Run, we restored African American Heritage Park with a new boardwalk and wayfinding signs, and enhanced the riparian buffer with native plants. Last June, we gathered with Alexandria community members to celebrate the completion of the Interceptor and honor African American history in Alexandria.
Since completing the Interceptor, we've achieved a 90% reduction in combined sewage overflows in Hooffs Run. Once the new pumping station is operational next month, we're on track to reach a 99% reduction — nearly eliminating overflows altogether. We see our community walking through African American Heritage Park every day, and our staff have spotted birds, fish, and other wildlife in the stream and restored riparian habitat. Once RiverRenew goes live on July 1, we will be ready to prevent millions of gallons of combined sewage from polluting our waterways, moving us towards a healthier future for our community.
